Historical Martindale-Hubbell now available on HeinOnline!

Posted: Mar 21, 2016

HeinOnline now includes a historical archive of Martindale-Hubbell Directories from 1868 to 1963. Prior to 1931, the publication was two separate law directories – Martindale’s American Law Directory, which began in 1868, and Hubbell’s Legal Directory, which started in 1870. In addition to listing the names of prominent attorneys in cities all across the U.S. and Canada, the directories also contained a synopsis or digest of laws. The digest summarized the law on specific topics in each state, as well court practice, court calendars, and Federal patent, trademark, and consular service. Later editions of the Directory also include lists of foreign attorneys and digests of the laws of foreign countries.

HeinOnline is available remotely to Massachusetts-based patrons at law firms of 50 attorneys or less. To access the Martindale-Hubbell archive, simply sign into our databases here using your Social Law username and password. From there, click on “HeinOnline” and then “Continue to HeinOnline.”  Once on the Hein main page, you will find the Martindale-Hubbell Directory listed under “Browse Collections by Name.”

For questions about using the HeinOnline database, or to access more current editions of Martindale-Hubbell, please contact that the Reference Department at (617)226-1520 or reference@socialaw.com.
