The Superior Court is pleased to invite applications for its 2025-26 Law Fellowship Program. We seek to fill as many as six Fellowship positions. The goal of the Fellowship Program is to provide entry-level or junior attorneys opportunities to develop legal research and writing skills and gain valuable knowledge and experience in a broad range of civil and criminal matters by assisting the Justices of the Superior Court. The Fellowship is also intended to serve as a potential pathway for outstanding Fellows to seek permanent positions as Research Attorneys in the Superior Court.
About Us. The Superior Court, established in 1859, adjudicates the state’s most serious criminal cases, including first-degree murder cases, and most significant civil cases, i.e., civil actions over $50,000. Superior Court jurisdiction also includes actions for equitable and/or injunctive relief, and actions for judicial review of certain administrative proceedings. The Court’s 82 Justices sit in 20 courthouses in all 14 state counties, and are assisted by approximately 40 Research Attorneys and Law Fellows. For more information, see
www.mass.gov/orgs/superior-court.
Duties. Fellows will work under the supervision and guidance of the Chief Justice, the Associate Justices, and the Manager of Legal Research Services. Among other duties, Fellows will assist the Justices by completing legal research and writing assignments, including research memoranda, bench memoranda, and draft decisions. Assignments may involve any of the legal issues within the Superior Court’s broad civil and criminal jurisdiction, and any aspect of court procedure. Fellows may rotate among various courthouse locations on a quarterly basis.
Courthouse locations include Boston, Woburn, Fall River, Worcester, and Springfield. See www.mass.gov/orgs/superior-court/locations. Accordingly, Fellows must be willing and able to travel to different courthouse locations.
Qualifications. The Superior Court invites Fellowship applications from graduating law students and recent graduates with less than two years of post-law school experience. We seek candidates with excellent legal research, writing, analytical, and communica-tion skills who can work independently, maintain high productivity, and produce quality work product. Preferred qualifica-tions include substantial legal research and writing experience, including current or prior judicial clerkship or internship experience; membership in the Massachusetts Bar or intent to apply for membership; and demonstrated commitment to government or public service, particularly within the Judicial branch. Judicial clerkship experience is defined as paid full-time post-graduate employment as a law clerk for a court or judge.
Additional Information. Fellows will serve a term of at least one year, starting Tuesday, September 2, 2025, and continuing through August 2026, at an annual salary of $73,722.23. Employee benefits include, but are not limited to, subsidized health, dental, and vision insurance, ten days of paid vacation time, and three days of paid personal time. Under Trial Court policy, hybrid office/remote work arrangements are available, subject to conditions and requirements. Fellows may have the opportunity to apply for a second-year term or promotion to a permanent Research Attorney position.
