Social Law Library members can access all of the Restatements & Principles of the Law through HeinOnline. The Restatements, Uniform Commercial Code, Model Penal Code, and many other secondary sources from ALI are available in the American Law Institute Library on HeinOnline. The Practical Lawyer series of journals (Practical Lawyer, Practical Litigator Practical Tax Lawyer, and Practical Real Estate Lawyer) are also included.
To access these resources, sign into the Research Database page and click on the link to HeinOnline. (Note: HeinOnline access is only available offsite to members based in Massachusetts and at firms of less than 50 attorneys. If you need copies of materials from HeinOnline, please contact the Reference Department at (617) 226-1520 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
From the ALI Library page, you can browse through individual Restatements by clicking on the links to the different titles; enter a citation into the Restatement Section Locator; or run a keyword search across all ALI material up at the top of the page in the main search box. Click on the “Search Help” button to see the search terms & connectors.
If you wish to run a keyword search within one topic or Restatement, just click on that topic. For Restatements with multiple editions, you will have the option to choose an edition or a combined version that includes all versions of a Restatement on a single topic. From here, you can run a search across the topic by using the “Search this title” box. The search will run across the main volumes as well as the most recent case citations and appendices.
The Restatements featured in HeinOnline are scans of the original texts. You can download a section as a PDF, and HeinOnline will provide a cover sheet with common citation formats. If you have any difficulty running a search or downloading a section, do not hesitate to contact the Reference staff at (617)226-1520 or email@example.com.
