The Social Law Library is hosting an important online CLE on March 2, 2021—Data Privacy and Security for Attorneys and Law Firms. Our panel will be moderated by Andrew Levchuk. Attorney Levchuk was Counsel at Bulkely Richardson for seven years and prior to that, Lead Counsel for the U.S. Justice Department for 24 years, and served as Senior Counsel for the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section before starting his own firm in 2019. Joining Andrew on our panel are attorneys Seth Berman, of Nutter, McClennen & Fish LLP, Adam Bookbinder, from Choate, Hall & Stewart and Amy Harman Burkart of Jones Day.
Hi Andrew—Thank you for taking a few minutes to discuss our upcoming program. What do you see as the most important educational needs for the practicing attorney in the area of data security?
Attorneys must learn to protect the confidentiality and security of their clients’ data and ensure that clients implement appropriate data security practices. Attorneys should also be aware of and comply with data security laws and regulations.
What are the biggest internal and external threats that all attorneys need to be concerned about regarding data security?
There are many threats, including firm members and employees who are not adequately trained and fall prey to social engineering and other attacks. External threats include ransomware—where attackers encrypt your data and then demand payment in return for the decryption key.
Tell us a little about your panelists and what experiences they bring to the program –
We have a panel of leading experts: Seth Berman of Nutter, Adam Bookbinder of Choate, Hall & Stewart, and Amy Harman Burkart of Jones Day. All three are former Assistant United States Attorneys, and all advise clients on investigations and responses to cybersecurity incidents, including network intrusions, thefts of customer data, and attacks by advanced persistent threat actors.
What can attorneys who attend this program expect to learn and take back to the office with them?
Attorneys will learn about the types of attacks of particular concern to lawyers and law firms. The panel will discuss criteria for assessing information security at a law firm and practical steps you can take now to enhance your readiness for a cyber incident.
Andrew, thank you for your time, and we look forward to seeing you and all of the panelists at 4 p.m., on March 2nd.
