Trial Court Chief Justice Paula M. Carey

BOSTON, MA -- Trial Court Chief Justice Paula M. Carey today announced the reappointment of the Honorable Roberto Ronquillo Jr. as Chief Justice of the Boston Municipal Court for a five-year term effective January 2, 2019, in accordance with G.L. c.211B, §5. Chief Justice Ronquillo has served on the Boston Municipal Court since 2001, and as Chief Justice of the department since his initial appointment in January 2014.

“I am pleased to announce the reappointment of Chief Justice Roberto Ronquillo to this key role leading the Boston Municipal Court,” said Chief Justice Carey. “He has worked with compassion and responsiveness to thoughtfully guide the development of court procedures and processes in the BMC and the Trial Court. As chair of the Trial Court’s Language Access Advisory Committee, he has overseen significant improvements in our efforts to ensure access to court users who are not proficient in English.” 

Chief Justice Ronquillo said, “I am honored to be reappointed to the position of Chief Justice of the Boston Municipal Court Department. I am grateful to Chief Justice Carey for the opportunity to serve the court users, my esteemed colleagues on the Boston Municipal Court Department, and the Trial Court for another five years. I will strive to continue to lead the BMC with integrity, compassion and fairness.”

Chief Justice Ronquillo previously served as First Justice of the East Boston Division of the Boston Municipal Court. Prior to his appointment to the bench he was a practicing attorney at his own firm and before that an Assistant District Attorney in Suffolk County. A resident of Revere, he received his law degree from New England School of Law and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Texas at El Paso.

The Boston Municipal Court Department is comprised of eight divisions with 30 authorized judicial positions in Suffolk County. The Massachusetts Trial Court includes seven court departments with 385 judges who deliver justice in 99 courthouses across the state.
