Prominent Leaders to Speak at Unveiling of Exhibit Describing Struggle for Racial Justice in the State Judicial System

 WHAT:
Prominent leaders, including former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Ralph D. Gants and Trial Court Chief Justice Paula M. Carey will deliver remarks at the unveiling of the Long Road to Justice: The African American Experience in the Massachusetts Courts exhibit, which describes the journey of African Americans in the struggle for racial justice in the Massachusetts court system.
The historical exhibit includes the enforcement of the fugitive slave act over tumultuous protest, the finding of segregation in the Boston Public Schools, and the elevation of African American leaders in state government, former Governor Patrick, retired Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Roderick L. Ireland, and former Senator and Attorney General Edward W. Brooke, to the state’s highest positions in all three branches of government. The Long Road to Justice Exhibit was initially created in 2000 and has been updated with a particular focus on lessons for middle and high school students throughout the Commonwealth.
The exhibit is sponsored by the Justice George Lewis Ruffin Society, which is affiliated with the Northeastern University School of Criminology and Criminal Justice.
