Employers put non-compete clauses in employment contracts to limit their workers ability to leave for rival businesses. Employees believe non-competes limit their freedom to work where they want to and maximize their earnings. Massachusetts State Senator Jason Lewis has proposed legislation that would restrict the use of these covenants not to compete.
