The law of fashion is the law of life. The crest of the wave of human interest is always moving…” Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., Law in Science, Law in Life (1899)
Dear Social Law Library Member:
Oliver Wendell Holmes’s evocative words may echo from the past, but they remind us that the never-ending progress of society is manifest in the ever-changing law.
The Social Law Library’s mission is to keep its 14,000 members atop what Holmes called “the crest of the wave.” Every day, members like you turn to Social Law for materials on current topics that Holmes could hardly have imagined:
- Unmanned Aircraft in the National Airspace: Critical Issues, Technology & the Law
- Assistive Reproductive Technology: A Lawyer’s Guide to Emerging Law & Science
- Gender Identity & Sexual Orientation Discrimination in the Workplace
- Implementing the Medical Marijuana Law: What Lawyers Need to Know
- A Practitioner's Guide to Wind Energy Project Development
- Climate Change and Sustainable Development Law
- Electronic Discovery & Digital Evidence
- The Gaming Law Minefield
- The Law of Transnational Business Transactions
These titles only scratch the surface of the hundreds of topics that the Library collects to keep the Massachusetts legal community on the cutting edge of legal practice.
Social Law is one of the nation’s elite law libraries, but it is not elitist. It serves the entire legal establishment. Solos are on the same footing as the city’s largest firms and government offices. And every major legal-services organization in Massachusetts receives free membership. Such equal and affordable access to one of the nation’s most forward-looking law libraries is essential to meeting the ideal of equal access to justice.
Holmes’s biographer pointed out that he not only spent his first day in practice at Social Law, but he used it almost daily until he was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. If Holmes were in practice today, there’s little doubt he’d still rely on Social Law’s vast resources and services to stay current with the never-ending changes in law and society.
Please make a charitable contribution to help Social Law stay atop Holmes’s “crest of the wave.” Be part of our Leadership Circle with a donation of $1,000 or more, or be a Friend with a contribution up to $99. Let’s join Holmes and ride the wave together.
