What: The Trial Court will mark the opening of its fifth veterans treatment court at a ceremony to be held at the Framingham District Court on Monday, November 9th. Judge David Cunis, First Justice of the Framingham District Court, and Judge Michael Fabbri, the presiding judge of the Middlesex County Veterans Treatment Court, will host the event.
Officials planning to attend the ceremony include: State Secretary of Veterans’ Services Francisco A. Ureña, District Court Chief Justice Paul C. Dawley, as well as representatives from Middlesex County Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian’s office, representatives from the Veterans Administration, local and state elected officials, and local veterans service agents.
Four other veterans treatment court sessions in Massachusetts operate out of District Courts in Dedham, Lawrence and Holyoke, and at the Central Division of the Boston Municipal Court. The newest veterans treatment court session in Framingham is part of a growing list of specialty courts in the Trial Court. Specialty courts are court sessions that provide court-supervised probation and mandated treatment focused on treating the mental health or substance abuse issues underlying criminal behavior. Massachusetts has four types of specialty court sessions: drug courts, mental health courts, veterans’ treatment courts, and a homeless court. There are 37 specialty courts in Massachusetts, including 22 adult drug courts, six mental health courts, five veterans’ treatment courts and three juvenile drug courts.
