The Massachusetts Legislature has
scheduled a hearing to discuss the regulation of unmanned aerial vehicles or “drones.” The technology used in unmanned aerial vehicles or drones has advanced in leaps and bounds over the past several years and the technology is one of the hottest innovations to hit recent technical shows. With the technology becoming mainstream and available to State Agencies and civilians alike, several states are currently in the process of drafting similar legislation. The Massachusetts bill would not allow unmanned aerial vehicles to be equipped with weapons. The acquisition, purchase, or procurement of unmanned aerial vehicles would be regulated by the Secretary of Public Safety. It would be unlawful for a government entity or official to operate a drone under any circumstances, unless it’s to execute a warrant or collect data on a subject after getting approval from the courts. The bill would also prohibit data collection about lawful peaceful activity and require officials to delete any information accidentally collected on anyone other than an intended subject.
