e Ralph D. Gants and Trial Court Chief Justice Paula M Carey created separ
ate\, multidisciplinary working groups to develop evidenced-based sentenci
ng protocols specifically for the Boston Municipal\, District\, Juvenile a
nd Superior Courts.\n \nIssued in 2016\, each court published particulariz
ed procedures and practices that promoted sentencing &ldquo\;best practice
s&rdquo\; tailored to the types of criminal cases handled by those courts.
\nThe court-by-court protocols match the purposes of sentencing with soci
al-science data and empirical research to determine the best\, evidence-ba
sed practices to enhance the effectiveness of probation and reduce overall
recidivism. \nThis program will specifically focus on the best sentencing
practices designed for the Superior Court. Adapted from a presentation to
the Superior Court bench\, this training for the bar will provide a summa
ry of the research underlying evidence-based sentencing precepts\, will re
view the application of the specific practices adopted by the Superior Cou
rt\, and will provide both prosecutors and defense counsel insight on the
practical implications of the new sentencing protocols. \nThe Superior Cou
rt&rsquo\;s publication\, &ldquo\;Criminal Sentencing in the Superior Cour
t: Best Practices for Individualized Evidenced-Based Sentencing\,&rdquo\;
will be among the course materials. It provides members of both bench and
bar with both Commentary and a detailed description of the seventeen Best
Practices adopted by the Court\, as well as sections on Resources\, Select
ed Statues\, Drug Sentences\, Fees\, and Probation Violations. Social La
